Dr. F. Batmanghelidj discovered through research that most so-called illnesses are actually symptoms of dehydration in the body. Once corrected, symptoms disappear.

 

Iranian born Dr Fereydoon Batmanghlidj first discovered the medicinal value of water when held in prison during the 1979 Iranian revolution. In the absence of official medication, he prescribed two glasses of water to an ulcer patient with severe abdominal pain. Within eight minutes, the pain subsided and he set out on his route to prove the medicinal value of water.

For over twenty years ago, Dr Fereydoon Batmanghelidj turned his back on conventional thinking. Since then, Dr Batmanghelidj believes he has treated thousands of patients with his controversial water theory which involves drinking a minimum of six to eight glasses of water a day.

Every day we lose at least two quarts (8 oz glasses) of water and some salt (which is necessary for maintaining acid and alkaline balance) vie urine, respiration, and perspiration. Instead of replaceing lost water by drinking more water, many people drink caffeinated beverages. Caffeine found in soda pop and in coffee acts as a diuretic that forces more water from the body than is contained in the caffeinated beverage itself.

During dehydration, the body produces more histamine. Histamine is a neurotransmitter involved in water rationing. It also regulates the thirst mechanism.By ignoring our body's thirst signals, we are preventing ourselves from using what is perhaps the simplest cure of all - WATER - in the alleviation of pain claims Dr Batmanghelidj in his book, Your Body's Many Cries for water. "Humans seem to lose their thirst sensation and, failing to recognise their water needs, they become gradually and chronically dehydrated as they get older." writes Dr Batmanghelidj. Contrary to popular belief, he claims that a dry mouth is the last signal of thirst and that the body can suffer from dehydration even when the mouth may be fairly moist. WE SHOULD BEGIN TO REALISE that in the same way, we have a "hunger pain" signal, we also have a "thirst pain" signal in the body, writes Dr Batmanghelidj. He believes that whatever their illness, people should first try the water cure before turning to drug treatment.

Dr Batmanghelidj's theory is based on the principle that we misinterpret thirst signals as pain and treat them with drugs which silence instead of cure the problem. "Because dehydration eventually causes loss of some functions, the various signals given by the water distribution system regulators during severe and lasting dehydration have been translated as indicators of unknown disease conditions of the body." he writes.

The human body is composed of 25% solid matter (the solute) and 75% water (the solvent) and, according to Dr Batmanghelidj, medical researchers have assumed that the solute composition is the reactive regulator of all fuctions of the human body. He believes that it is wrong to assume that water acts only as a solvent and never as a regulator of different parts of the body.

In his book, Dr Batmanghelidj puts forward his theory of regional thirst that is the signal of chronic water shortage in the area where pain is registered. For example, the pain of rheumatoid arthritis as an indicator of water deficiency in the affected joint cartilage surface.

If the initial pain of the arthritis is taken seriously and strict attention is paid to daily water intake. Dr Batmanghalidj suggests that further damage to the joint surfaces can be avoided. Likewise, the author believes that stress-related conditions such as ulcers, migraine and high blood pressure can be avoided if the body has sufficient water intake.

Dr Batmanghelidj gives examples of patients who have followed his advice using ordinary tap water with positive results in reduction of blood pressure, allergy relief and weight loss. He even goes so far as to link the lack of water with depression.

He claims that our bodies need a minimum of six to eight 250 millimetre glasses of water a day and that other water-containing beverages such as coffee, tea and alchol are not useful substitutes. He also encourages his patients to drink ordinary tap water, not only because it is free but also because you are less likely to run out of it and therefore can keep to the required daily dosage.

There is however a word of caution for anyone about to take up his cure, "Do not overdrink water thinking you can undo the damage of many months or years of dehydration by excessive intake of water in a few days. You need to drink a normal amount every day until full hydration of the body is achieved over a long period of time" he writes.

Dr Fereydoon Batmanghlidj's Water Cure Recipe

1. Drink 1/2 your body weight of water in ounces, daily. Example: 180 lb = 90 oz. of water daily. Divide that into 8 or 10 oz. glasses and that's how many glasses you will need to drink, daily.

2. Use 1/4 tsp. of sea salt for every quart of water you drink. Use salt liberally with food. As long as you drink the water, you can use the salt. Take potassium daily, ie. banana, orange juice, etc.

3. Avoid caffeinated or alcoholic drinks. These are diuretics and will dehydrate you. Every six ozs. of caffeine or alcohol requires an additional 10 to 12 ozs. of water to re-hydrate you.

 

Proper timing of water consumption

When should water be consumed during the course of a day? Initially, one should drink one or two full glasses of water upon arising in the morning. Then, 30 minutes before each major meal, one should again consume one or two glasses of water. This not only helps with weight management but also sets the stage for proper digestive processes and reduces or eliminates the possibility of GERD or acid reflux. The balance of daily water consumption should be throughout the day, with one or two glasses taken about 2 hours after major meals. Also, to aid in the natural sleep process, drinking a full glass of water upon retiring and placing a pinch of salt on the tongue facilitates natural sleep.

Cure # 1: Water prevents and cures heartburn.

Heartburn is a signal of water shortage in the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract. It is a major thirst signal of the human body. The use of antacids or tablet medications in the treatment of this pain does not correct dehydration, and the body continues to suffer as a result of its water shortage.

Tragedy: Not recognizing heartburn as a sign of dehydration and treating it with antacids and pill medications will, in time, produce inflammation of the stomach and duodenum, hiatal hernia, ulceration, and eventually cancers in the gastrointestinal tract, including the liver and pancreas.


Cure # 2: Water prevents and cures arthritis.


Rheumatoid joint pain - arthritis - is a signal of water shortage in the painful joint. It can affect the young as well as the old. The use of pain-killers does not cure the problem, but exposes the person to further damage from pain medications. Intake of water and small amounts of salt will cure this problem.


Cure # 3: Water prevents and cures back pain.


Low back pain and ankylosing arthritis of the spine are signs of water shortage in the spinal column and discs - the water cushions that support the weight of the body. These conditions should be treated with increased water intake - not a commercial treatment, but a very effective one.

Tragedy: Not recognizing arthritis and low back pain as signs of dehydration in the joint cavities and treating them with pain-killers, manipulation, acupuncture, and eventually surgery will, in time, produce osteoarthritis when the cartilage cells in the joints have eventually all died. Cure # 4: Water prevents and cures angina.


Heart pain - angina - is a sign of water shortage in the heart/lung axis. It should be treated with increased water intake until the patient is free of pain and independent of medications. Medical supervision is prudent. However, increased water intake is angina's cure.


Cure # 5: Water prevents and cures migraines.


Migraine headache is a sign of water need by the brain and the eyes. It will totally clear up if dehydration is prevented from establishing in the body. The type of dehydration that causes migraine might eventually cause inflammation of the back of the eye and possibly loss of eye sight.


Cure #6: Water prevents and cures colitis.


Colitis pain is a signal of water shortage in the large gut. It is associated with constipation because the large intestine constricts to squeeze the last drop of water from the excrements - thus the lack of water lubrication.

Increased water intake will prevent asthma attacks. Asthmatics need also to take more salt to break the mucus plugs in the lungs that obstruct the free flow of air in and out of the air sacs.

Tragedy: Not recognizing asthma as the indicator of dehydration in the body of a growing child not only will sentence many thousands of children to die every year, but will permit irreversible genetic damage to establish in the remaining 14 million asthmatic children.


Cure # 8: Water prevents and cures high blood pressure.


Hypertension is a state of adaptation of the body to a generalized drought, when there is not enough water to fill all the blood vessels that diffuse water into vital cells. As part of the mechanism of reverse osmosis, when water from the blood serum is filtered and injected into important cells through minute holes in their membranes, extra pressure is needed for the "injection process." Just as we inject I.V. "water" in hospitals, so the body injects water into tens of trillions of cells all at the same time. Water and some salt intake will bring blood pressure back to normal!

Tragedy: Not recognizing hypertension as one of the major indicators of dehydration in the human body, and treating it with diuretics that further dehydrate the body will, in time, cause blockage by cholesterol of the heart arteries and the arteries that go to the brain. It will cause heart attacks and small or massive strokes that paralyze. It will eventually cause kidney disease. It will cause brain damage and neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease.


Cure # 9: Water prevents and cures early adult-onset diabetes.


Adult-onset diabetes is another adaptive state to severe dehydration of the human body. To have adequate water in circulation and for the brain's priority water needs, the release of insulin is inhibited to prevent insulin from pushing water into all body cells. In diabetes, only some cells get survival rations of water. Water and some salt will reverse adult-onset diabetes in its early stages.

Tragedy: Not recognizing adult-onset diabetes as a complication of dehydration will, in time, cause massive damage to the blood vessels all over the body. It will cause eventual loss of the toes, feet and legs from gangrene. It will cause eye damage, even blindness.


Cure # 10: Water lowers blood cholesterol.


High cholesterol levels are an indicator of early drought management by the body. Cholesterol is a clay-like material that is poured in the gaps of some cell membranes to safeguard them against losing their vital water content to the osmotically more powerful blood circulating in their vicinity. Cholesterol, apart from being used to manufacture nerve cell membranes and hormones, is also used as a "shield" against water taxation of other vital cells that would normally exchange water through their cell membranes.


Cure # 11: Water cures depression, loss of libido, chronic fatigue syndrome, lupus, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy.
These conditions are caused by prolonged chronic dehydration. They will clear up once the body becomes well and regularly hydrated. In these conditions, exercising one's muscles should be part of the treatment program.

Note: Your body needs a minimum of 6 to 8, eight ounce glasses of water each day. Remember, alcohol, juice, sodas, coffee, and tea don't count as water. Dr. Batmanghelidj recommends one glass a half hour before each meal and a similar amount 2-1/2 hours after each meal with an extra glass taken before the heaviest meal or before going to bed. As an experiment, record the number of glasses of water you drink over a normal 3 day period. You'll be amazed. Most of us think we are drinking far more water than we actually do. In fact 3 to 4 glasses at most is what people usually find; far short of the 6 to 8. Try of for yourself and see.

It is believe that under normal conditions, the average person requires at least 1.5 to 2.5 liters of water a day. (Refer Water Cure Recipe). However, how pure is the water you are currently ingesting?

The quality of our drinking water is steadily deteriorating because of chlorine, flouride, pesticides and multitude of other toxins from our polluted environment.. Water quality can become unhealthy because of bacteria, algae, chloroform (from chlorination), nitrates and the very dangerous metals such as cadmium and aluminum. These pollutants may come from factory discharges, agriculture, sewer pipes, water mains and the acid rain.

Water treatment facilities chlorinate water in order to kill bacteria. But the pipes that carry the water to you may also be a culprit. The deteriorating network of water mains in a majority of the world's cities was most likely installed 25 to 75 years ago. This contributes to poor quality water and the possibility of asbestos being released.

Even with a water purification system in your home, your water may be clean but also "DEAD". To illustrate the value of balanced water, at an acid pH level of 6, crabs die, and fish and all living marine life die at a pH of 3.

Our bodies are alkaline by design and acid by function. Maintaining alkalinity is essential for life health and vitality. All leading biochemists and medical physiologists have recognized pH or acid/alkaline balance as the most important aspect of a balanced and healthy body. They have long known that the maintenance of an alkaline pH is critical to cellular health.

We live and die at the cellular level. In order to understand pH balance, it is necessary to realize that all the 75 trillion cells of the human body are slightly acidic and must exist in a slightly alkaline environment (the body fluid) if they are to remain healthy and product energy.

Alkalinity is anabolic (builds up) and acidity is catabolic (tears down). As each cell performs its task of respiration, it secretes metabolic wastes which are acidic.
