Know The Content of Your Drinking Water: Alkalife Water

The library is a resource center for information on drinking water. There is a section that describes different types of drinking water e.g. Filtered & Boiled Water, Reverse Osmosis Water System, Distilled water, Diamond Water. It even has a section to describe different Alkaline Water Filtration Systems such as Kangen, Viwa, AO, KOI, Jupiter water systems. At Alkalife Water, our objective is educate the public to understand differences between alkaline water with other popular drinking water such as Filtered & Boiled Water, Reverse Osmosis Water System, Distilled water, Diamond water, etc. We even provide comparison charts to provide a fair and comprehensive comparison of specifications, features and prices for all the popular brands of Alkaline Water system sold in Malaysia such Kangen (enagic), Viwa, Jupiter, AO, KOI systems.

Reverse Osmosis

In the Reverse Osmosis Water System, water is pumped through thin synthetic membrane filters with pores large enough for water molecules to pass through but too small for larger polluting molecules to pass. The water on the other side of the membrane is thus purified while the pollutants are trapped by the membrane. This process is not only tedious (it takes several hours to produce one gallon of water) but also wasteful as between 3-10 gallons of tap water are needed to produce 1 gallon of purified water (with the remainder drained away). Reverse Osmosis also removes big molecules minerals such as Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium, Potassium, etc. that are necessary for maintaining good health. In Reverse Osmosis Water System there are many filters that need to be changed and contamination can occur if the membrane filters are not change regularly.

Distilled Water

Distilled Water is produced through the process of distillation where water to be processed is vaporized and then condensed. The water is very clean. While the process removes impurities it also removes beneficial natural minerals. Water in its natural state always contains minerals. Because distilled water does not contain minerals, it is in an unnatural state that it automatically tries to correct. It does this by combining with any other substances it comes in contact with such as carbon dioxide forming carbonic acid. As such distilled water can be considered 'aggressive". Distilled water will react with the bottle material (PVC, PET etc.) and absorb some of its components. Thus drinkers of distilled water also ingest a small proportion of the bottle material.

Diamond Water

Diamond Water system uses a series of filters (normally 6 filters) to filter the water, removes chlorine and impurities and to convert the water to small molecular cluster-size. One of the filters contains magnetic mineral stones to make the water slightly alkaline. Generally the pH of the water is neutral to slight alkaline.

Filtered & Boiled Water

Filtered & Boiled Water is the most common drinking water amongst homes. Most homes have a filter that removes impurities. This filter should at least be able to filter to less than 1 micron as bacteria is 1 micron size. Virus is smaller. For safe consumption chlorine should be removed either through boiling (evaporation) or filtered using carbon (absorption). There is also a possibility that prolonged boiling of chlorinated water can caused trihalomethanes (THM's) to be formed. This chemical compound is carcinogic.

Bottled Water

Bottled Water is also very popular. However the quality is not always consistent as it depends on the water source and the filtering and bottling process. Many bottlers cut corners on the quality control and it depends on the authority to do random checking on the facilities. The water is never fresh as it can stay on the shelf for weeks and months. Even bottled water delivered to offices and homes in 5 gal drums are at least 2 weeks old and will be depleted of any health properties. Bottled water can be reverse osmosis(RO), distilled or mineral water although most bottled water delivered to offices tend to be RO. As most bottled water uses plastic the biggest health risk associated with bottled water is the exposure of plastic bottle to sunlight. The chemical reaction of heated plastic and water produces a carcinogen compound is detrimental to our health.

Alkaline Water

Alkaline Water is also known by other names such as anti-oxidant water, ionized water, oxygenated water, micro-cluster water or hydrogen water. The water is produced by passing filtered tap water through a Water Ionizer. The Water Ionizer electrically splits the filtered tap water into Alkaline Antioxidant Water for drinking and Acidic Super Oxidant Water for beauty & medical uses. Alkaline water can also be produced by passing filtered water through mineral stones. The latter method does not require electricity. As the various names given imply that alkaline water has health properties such as anti-oxidant to reduce oxidative damage, highly oxygenated, micro-cluster for faster hydration and detox and alkaline pH to neutralize acidic wastes in our body. Alkaline water also occurs in nature in certain springs and glacial water. One example of natural Alkaline water is the zam-zam water found in a spring in Medina. Others include spring water in Louvres, France and glacial water in Hunza, Pakistan, Lijang, China, etc.

Measuring devices used to measure properties of water:-

  • ORP (Oxidation Reduction Potential) Meter is device to measure the negative ions value in the water. As free radicals damage our body cells through oxidation process ( taking away negative ions or electrons from the cell), having excess negative ions will have anti-oxidation effect.  Hence ORP measures the anti-oxidation strength in the water and food.  The meter is calibrated in mV and negative readings measure anti-oxidant strength to resist oxidation whereas positive readings means ability to oxidize.  Freshly plucked fruits such as grapes and oranges have ORP readings of -200mV.

  • pH meter measures pH of the water.  A reading of 7 is neutral.  Higher than 7 means water is alkaline whereas below 7 indicates acidity.

  • Methyl Orange/Litmus is a solution/paper to indicates pH via color change.  Yellow to red indicates acidity, green is neutral and blue to purple alkaline

  • TDS meter (Total Dissolved Solids) is a measure of the total amount of mobile charged ions, including minerals, salts or metals dissolved in a given volume of water, expressed in units of mg per unit volume of water (mg/L), also referred to as parts per million (ppm).  Some vendors selling Reverse Osmosis and Distilled water use TDS meter to measure water purity and cleanliness.  This is incorrect as healthy water should have a reading between 200mg/L to 300mg/L.  Very low TDS readings imply the water is devoid of minerals and hence becoming acidic.  There are some TDS meters that have color indication such as dark brown for high TDS reading.  Many consumers are duped by these vendors into thinking that their water is dirty because of the dark color.
